Padmavati Sivaramakrishna Iyer (a pioneer in cardiology and a doctor) passed away after contracting Covid-19 at the age of 103. IE

She was admitted to the National Heart Institute (NHI) 11 days ago and later developed pneumonia. She was put on ventilator support but suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday.

Born in 1917 in Burma, now Myanmar, she graduated from Rangoon Medical College from where she started her career in cardiology.

Former envoy Katyayani Shankar Bajpai dies of Covid-19 ToI

Katyayani Shankar Bajpai (92), former ambassador to China, US and Pakistan, and secretary in MEA, passed away on Sunday after a battle with COVID.

In a long and distinguished career, he served as India’s ambassador to the US, China, and Pakistan.

Katyayani Shankar Bajpai, a career diplomat of the Indian Foreign Service, better known as Shankar Bajpai, passed away on August 30, 2020, at the age of 92. He was a career diplomat of the 1952 batch of officers.

Karnataka CM to flag off first RORO train from Bengaluru to Solapur TH

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa flagged off the maiden Roll-on Roll-off (RORO) train from (Nelamangala) Bengaluru to Solapur through a videoconference.

Benefits of RORO Trains:

  • On average, 7,000 trucks run daily between the two points. “The introduction of RORO trains will help reduce road traffic and the consumption of fuel. A truck takes 36 to 38 hours to reach the final destination whereas a RORO train will cover the distance in 17 hours, Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi said.
  • The Chief Minister pointed out the new train service will help in the transportation of industrial and agricultural products from Bengaluru and in receiving onion, pulses, and other goods from Maharashtra

RORO train services were first introduced by Konkan Railways in 1999.

The speed of freight trains has increased from 20 kmph to 50 kmph.

Environmental Impact:

The Hubballi-Ankola line has been met with opposition from environmentalists as the track alignment extends to over 168 km and cuts through the Western Ghats. Experts believe it would destroy the existing biodiversity hotspot.

Nitin Gadkari inaugurates ₹400 cr. infra projects in Gadchiroli TH

The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated 3 bridges and 2 road improvement projects concluded at an outlay of over ₹400 crores in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra.

National Highways in Gadchiroli during his tenure had increased from 54 km to 647 km and his Ministry had so far approved 44 road projects of 541 km length with an outlay of ₹1,740 crores for the district.

India and Russia are the online Chess Olympiad champions. TH

The two finalists (India & Russia) were declared the joint winners by the world chess governing body FIDE after at least two games in the second match were affected by internet connectivity issues.

Held online for the first time — because of the coronavirus pandemic — Olympiad, history of which dates back to 1924, is the biggest team championship in chess.

Some 163 countries took part in the online tournament. For India to become the joint champion — after starting out as the seventh seed — along with favourite and top seed Russia is no mean achievement.

Novak Djokovic is unbeaten in 2020 and his triumph at the Western and Southern Open makes him the firm favourite for the US Open.
